An overview of sober living houses
Sober living houses started on the US west coast and can now be found in every state in the country. They provide a place of residence for recovering alcoholics and drug addicts while they transition from the addiction treatment and recovery center back into society. This concept grew out of a need for these individuals to have an environment that was safe and supportive and to continue their recovery once they have left the in-patient treatment and recovery program that they were enrolled in.
It is an interim step in the recovery process that can be very beneficial to those individuals who are not totally confident in their sobriety enough to return home to their community. While you are in residency in sober living houses, you will participate in evening group support and therapy sessions so that you can pursue a regular life during the daytime. Additionally, you will need to adhere to certain guidelines and rules while in residency there.
For instance, you will be under curfew every day and can only be out so late at night. You must attend those evening therapy sessions mentioned above and attend other therapeutic meetings whenever required. Additionally, you will be assigned specific chores that will have to be completed. These are just some of the basics, but in addition to these, there are 5 rules that you will have to strictly follow while you are in residency there:
- No alcohol or drugs are allowed on the property
- You will be subjected to random alcohol or drug testing
- Mandatory attendance at AA or NA meetings is required
- You must pay your bills on time and act responsibly
- The peer group of the residence must accept you before you can live there
Every one of the sober living houses out there is unique and not all of their requirements or rules may be the same. However, you will find that the five above are in force in all of these residences.
