What is a sober living halfway house?
The concept of a sober living halfway house arose out of the need for recovering alcoholics to enter into a transitional type of housing where they could continue in their endeavors and hopefully return home where they would remain clean and sober for life. Although they weren’t always successful, it did benefit a number of recovering alcoholics and they were able to return to a normal, substance-free lifestyle. Today, these types of residences cater to the needs of the recovering drug addict as well.
In the US, the sober living halfway house was born on the west coast but eventually spread throughout the country. There are literally hundreds of these facilities nationwide that offer recovering individuals a place to stay while continuing their efforts. Although they all have certain guidelines and rules that their tenants must adhere to, the following 5 are the most common and usually all of them have these requirements:
- The individual must be generally accepted by the peer group of the sober living halfway house
- They must be responsible and pay their monthly bills on time
- They will be subjected to random alcohol or drug tests
- They must attend mandatory meetings at either AA or NA
- They are not allowed to have alcohol or drugs on the property
You have to remember that the recovery process never ends once you have rid your body of alcohol or drugs. This interim, transitional housing is very beneficial, especially for the individual who is not completely confident in their sobriety yet.
Finding a facility can be challenging
Due to the fact that so many of these sober living halfway house residences are available, finding the one that best suits your personal needs can be extremely challenging and even frustrating. You want to find a residence whose tenants are similar to you and what you have gone through with your addiction. This is just a better type of support mechanism and you are apt to benefit more from being around individuals just like you rather than those who have gone through a different type of substance addiction.
