Self Help Drug Treatment

What do we mean by self-help drug treatment?

A self-help drug treatment environment allows the addicted individual to pursue their spiritual paths while not being forced into adhering to other beliefs that are contradictory to their own. Additionally, these self-help programs respect the individual’s belief system and understand that their spiritual journey could be the most important aspect of their recovery from drug addiction.

Typically, these self-help drug treatment programs are comprised of three paths or “tracks” that compliment the cognitive behavior therapy that the client undergoes. This includes:

  • the cognitive/holistic track
  • the faith-based track
  • the self-help track

The self-help track enables the client who is already a believer, or one who is interested in pursuing their interests in this track, to choose a track within the self-help drug treatment program. This will involve fellowships, recovery communities, and support groups.

There are normally a series of elements involved in self-help tracks that teach the client how to enhance their recovery which include:

  • guided meditation sessions
  • inside recovery meetings
  • lectures given by fellow addicts and counselors
  • outside recovery meetings

These elements are coupled with an intensive self-discovery and self-inventory part of the self-help drug treatment program. The client now has the opportunity to uncover and discover those obstacles in their lives that have blocked there attempts at overcoming their addictions and achieving a complete recovery. By removing years of guilt, remorse and shame, they can start their lives over and continue to live substance-free.

Achieving empowerment and strength with self-help groups

One of the primary goals of the self-help drug treatment program is to enable the client to empower themselves and gain the strength they need to deal with the pressures and stresses of everyday life. They are taught how to avoid potentially harmful situations by avoiding certain people and places that could trigger their addictive behavior and cause them to start using substances again.

Although health professionals will encourage you to turn to medical professionals in order to get the help you need to overcome your drug dependency, an entire industry has evolved that based on looking inward for the answers and solutions. In other words, looking within yourself is the way to overcome your drug addiction and recover from it. It is fueled by believing that any lasting and substantial changes come from within.
