What exactly is opium, you may be wondering?  Opium is a highly addictive narcotic that is extracted from the natural opium poppy seed.  It is used in the creation of the very dangerous drug, heroin.  Heroin is one of the most addictive synthetic opiate based drugs, and can get a person hooked after just one use.  There are multiple methods of delivery for the drug, such as intravenously, muscular injection, oral and nasally.  The length of time it takes to take effect will vary depending on the method. Just one use is all it takes for the addiction process to start.

An Opium addiction is one of the hardest to treat due to the highly addictive nature of it and the extreme effects it has on the body and mind while going through withdrawal.  It can be so severe, in fact, that many choose to continue using rather than experience the torture of going through withdrawal.  The effects of heroin are short-lived and often times one will use more frequently in order to try and achieve that same level of high that they experienced when initially using, unfortunately it rarely stops there.  The best way to avoid an opium addiction is to not use in the first place.  If you are even considering it, educate yourself about the drug, its effects and the excruciating process of withdrawal.  The risks are not worth it, by any means.

The withdrawal symptoms that occur when trying to treat an opium addiction are severe.  The more you become tolerant to the drug and the longer period of time you use, will intensify the withdrawal symptoms a great deal.  Do not assume that you can just start using methadone to treat when you are ready to quit.  Although it may be helpful for some, many also become addicted to it as well.  Your best option is to never start using.  Educating yourself on how to deal with peer pressure and avoid situations that may give you an opportunity to use.  Learning some simple techniques can save you from a life of agonizing drug addiction and the physical and psychological pain related to it.

For those who have recovered from an opium addiction, they have described the withdrawal as the worse hell that they have ever experienced.  The physical pain is so bad that many do not make it and start using again within the first couple days of detoxification.  It is comparable to a severe and agonizing flu.  One can expect to experience severe body aches, vomiting, shakes, nausea, sweating, hot and cold flashes, dizziness, and intense cravings, muscle contractions that can leave one unable to walk, move, or hold something as simple as a cup.  If you have ever experienced the flu, you can understand just how horrible it can be, and withdrawal that one experiences with an opium addiction is multiplied tenfold.  It is very important that you seek treatment by trained professionals as well as a rehabilitation program to help deal with the psychological effects that an opium addiction can have.
