Methadone is a synthetic opioid that is most widely known for its use in treatment for other addictions to drugs such as heroin.  Unfortunately people may also develop a Methadone addiction.  Methadone is intended to slowly wean a person from opiate based drugs, such as heroin due to its ability to mimic the drug with less intense withdrawal symptoms that one may experience with heroin, and causes many to continue using the drug rather than experience the kind of suffering that is involved with heroin.

A Methadone Addiction can develop the same as any other addiction.  One may begin taking methadone as a treatment for a heroin addiction, as it mimics the drug and the effects tend to last longer.  Over time one can become addicted, and it can be even harder to kick that heroin itself.   Methadone also has many of the side effects that one would expect with other similar drugs.  Withdrawal symptoms associated with a methadone addiction can be excruciating, as with heroin.  The body begins to ache and the shakiness or jitters start.  You feel like you have the flu, only it gets so more intense than that.  One may experience severe muscle contractions that may prevent movement or from holding something as simple as a cup.  Withdrawal is very serious and may have potentially deadly side effects.  It is highly recommended that one participate in an inpatient detoxification program that can be monitored by medically trained professionals.  There are also some new, experimental,  rapid detox treatments that may be available while under anesthesia, or even opiate agonist patches that can withdrawal over a period of a week or two.

Getting help for a Methadone addiction is very important and a very serious matter. Successful detoxification does not mean that one will not suffer from a relapse.  Addiction to any drug can have both physical and psychological elements at play, and one may require intense psychological therapy during their rehabilitation. In fact, it is usually a strict requirement in many of the treatment programs available. There are many different kinds of rehabilitation programs, so it is important to review them and meet with a rehabilitation specialist that can help find the most suitable rehabilitation treatment center or program that can meet your specific needs.  One program may offer great success for someone, but be completely ineffective in your treatment.  This is why it is very important to get care that is matched up with your physical and psychological needs.

It is very important not to give up hope if you suffer from a relapse or if one program does not seem to be working for you. Stick with it, or perhaps meet with your rehabilitation specialist to review other treatment possibilities that may be more suited to your needs.  You may even find that your needs are changing throughout your recovery and may possible want to adjust your treatment to best meet those changing needs.  The most important thing is that you obtain sobriety, and are able to maintain it.
