Dilaudid is a narcotic used primarily for treatment of severe pain.  When used on a routine basis the chances of developing a Dilaudid addiction is extremely high.  As with many other narcotics used to manage pain, one may become tolerant over a longer period of use and may become physically dependent.  While this physical dependence is developing, a psychological one is developing as well.  The brain becomes accustomed to these increased levels of dopamine in the brain and when they begin to fall and the user begins to experience the early symptoms of withdrawal, no matter how slight, their brain begins to tell them that they need the Dilaudid to get by, even if they may not be experiencing any pain at all.  The mind convinces them that they need it to function, when it is not true in the slightest.

It can be hard enough to come to the realization that you may have a Dilaudid addiction or that your use of it is completely out of control.  Making that decision to get help for it can be equally as difficult and sometimes people just do not know where to begin.  Understanding how addiction works is a great start and a subject you will likely become quite familiar with over your course of treatment, which will likely begin with counseling and detoxification.

Detoxification is the process that you will go through when your body is no longer receiving the Dilaudid. The severity of the withdrawal symptoms will be dependent on you, your body, the amount of drugs used on a routine basis and the length of time you have been using for.  The longer and more you have used may result in withdrawal symptoms lasting months or years rather than a few short weeks.  This is one reason why it is important to get help for your Dilaudid addiction early one, when you first being to notice there may be a problem.  There are some great detoxification programs available, and some that may be able to help ease the severity of some of the withdrawal symptoms.  It is a good idea to review all of your options and speak with your counselor on which treatment method may be in your best interests.  You may have a certain belief structure and prefer natural means rather than medically assisted means, so it helps to make sure you are provided with all the information regarding the different detoxification methods available.

Rehabilitation treatment programs also may vary a great deal from one to the other.  Some may be based on twelve step programs, while others focus on behavior modification, holistic healing, or treatment though gradual reduction of usage.  The method that is right for you will depend on you, your beliefs, as well as your medical history. It is always advised to seek the assistance from your medical care provider before abruptly quitting a substance due to the risks that may be involved.  You are a very important part of recovery, without you, there is no point.
