Codeine is typically found as an active ingredient in pain relievers and cough medicines and may even be available over the counter in some states, though the amount of codeine is strictly regulated.  Codeine is part of the opiate family and has similar effects to that of morphine.  It is often used as an experimental drug, and though the withdrawal symptoms may be less intense than what one may experience when using morphine or heroine, they can still be extremely bothersome and should be taken seriously.  One may also develop a tolerance to codeine which is common with many substances that are being used for prolonged periods of time.

A codeine addiction should be taken seriously.  The fact that it may be available in over the counter and contained within other products does not make it safe.  Whether you have inadvertently become addicted through medical treatment or are using codeine as an experimental, or gateway drug, getting help as soon as possible for your addiction is extremely important.  While one may view it as harmless because of its potential availability, it is anything but harmless and just as addictive as morphine or heroin.  The effects of an addiction are not just physical, but psychological as well.  While your body is becoming adjusted to the dosage and becoming more tolerant, your brain is tricking itself into believe that this drug is necessary, when in fact it is the addiction process in full swing.

A pattern of use is being developed and can be very difficult to break as time goes on.  Your chances of a full recovery can greatly increase when you seek treatment sooner, rather than years later.  The more time that goes by, your body develops a tolerance to the drug and it will require a higher dosage to achieve the desired effect.  Continue this for a long period of time, and the addiction is well under way and can be more difficult to treat, resulting in more intense and severe withdrawal symptoms as well as the damaging psychological effects that will need to be addressed.

There is hope for treatment and recovery from a codeine addiction.  There may be several detoxification methods available to you, which may assist in minimizing some of the more bothersome withdrawal symptoms, including traditional and holistic treatments.  Therapy is typically required on some level due to the psychological effects that an addiction has on the brain.  You may opt for single, group, peer, or family therapy, or perhaps a combination.  The stronger your support base, the better your chances of achieving a full recovery are.  There are also sober living facilities that can offer you a clean and sober living environment to help you get back on track after you have completed your rehabilitation program.  It has proven useful to many, to be able to live in a home that they know is free from drugs or alcohol as well as have the added benefits of support from others that may be experiencing something similar.
